Cheetahs will find a home in India again

Plans are moving forward to reintroduce 18 cheetahs to India, where they have not been seen since 1967. There has been some debate about the reintroduction, as some environmental groups feel that India should stabilize its population of tiger before trying to reintroduce cheetah. There are hopes that the presence of cheetahs will benefit tourism.

Shahgarh, one of the areas targeted for reintroduction, is surrounded on 3 sides by Pakistan. The cheetahs will need wild gazelles brought into the area, which may prove difficult as the wild gazelle number in India has already dropped due to poaching.

The word "cheetah" comes from ancient Sanskrit word "chitraku", meaning spots.
